Job Summary
AFF has a Communications and Membership Unit (CMU) that is responsible for
the production of communication materials including books, compendia, training
modules, working papers, journal articles, reports, factsheets and policy
briefs; in addition to maintaining the AFF website (www.afforum.org) and communication tools that include a
quarterly newsletter, press kit, posters, brochures, flyers, PowerPoint
presentations, etc.
Roles and responsibilities
• Develop, maintain and update the AFF knowledge management and
communication strategy and associated work plans.
• Develop and/or improve existing AFF communication materials, including
books, compendia, training modules, working papers, journal articles, reports,
policy briefs, factsheets, datasets, blogs, newsletters, press kits, posters,
brochures, flyers, powerpoint presentations, displays and graphic work.
• Lead in the improvement and maintenance of AFF’s web-based platforms and
social networking sites, by securing their day-to-day management, improving
them, as well as developing new content and adding new functionalities.
• Establish and maintain effective knowledge management practices for the
AFF team.
• Identify new networks and strengthen collaboration with existing networks
and other initiatives for collecting and sharing forest resources data.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen the capacity of partners to
validate, and update existing information and improve timeliness of data
gathering and reporting, and knowledge sharing.
• Establish and maintain links with key databases to facilitate access and
sharing of data
• Identify, evaluate, develop, and distribute a variety of relevant media
materials in multiple, appropriate formats (press releases, feature stories,
etc.).
• Maintain and update communications monitoring and evaluation plans as
well as conduct timely and accurate monitoring of knowledge management and
communication activities to ensure objectives are met and the strategy is
effective.
• Undertake lessons learned, review successful and unsuccessful
communication experiences, and share findings.
Skill set
• An MSc in Knowledge Management, Communications, Journalism, Public
Relations, Corporate Communications or related fields.
• Background in a natural resource management related field (e.g.,
forestry, environmental sciences) is an advantage.
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in
knowledge management and communication (such as in print, broadcast, web and
social media) and public relations in international organisations.
• Demonstrated experience in creating and implementing knowledge management
and communication strategy is needed.
• Ability to develop compelling stories from the programmatic and other
activities of AFF is critical.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining current knowledge management
practices is required.
• Skill in developing and maintaining websites and social media sites is
essential.
• Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of the French language is
an added advantage.
• Knowledge of Adobe InDesign or other similar software, photography and
photo-editing, as well as filming and video-editing are an advantage.
